The Old Guitarist is from a series of prints by Hockney that formed part of a portfolio of 20 images titled The Blue Guitar: Etchings by David Hockney.
The etchings by David Hockney where inspired by Wallace Stevens who in turn was inspired by Pablo Picasso. Published as a portfolio of 20 coloured etchings with aquatint from a technique he learnt from working with Aldo Crommelynck (Pablo Picasso's printer). Hockney created the etchings to accompany the book-length poem by modernist American poet Wallace Stevens (1879-1955) which the created the print portfolio and the book (circa 1977).
