A Grander Tome," produced by TASCHEN, epitomizes David Hockney’s vast and vivid career in a colossal SUMO-sized volume, capturing the grandeur and breadth of his artistic journey. The artist reflects upon over six decades of creative endeavors, starting from his adolescent years at Bradford School of Art, progressing through his pivotal moments in the 1960s’ vibrant London, his time amidst the swimming pools of 1970s Los Angeles, and culminating in his latest extensive collection of portraits, digital paintings on iPad, and scenic depictions of Yorkshire.

This is the first instance that Hockney’s artistic legacy has been encapsulated in such a magnificent and engaging format. As we turn each page, we are mesmerized by an explosion of colors – blues, pinks, greens, and oranges, showcasing Hockney’s mastery of color and his unparalleled ability to capture the essence of his surroundings. Through his persistent exploration of perception and depiction, we are treated to the subtle gleam of light on a wet puddle in Yorkshire, the deep gold hues of "A Bigger Grand Canyon," the rural splendor of "Bigger Trees near Warter," and the iconic "A Bigger Splash," which captures the shimmering allure of a turquoise pool under the California sun. These seminal works are complemented by an array of drawings, photo-composites, collages showcasing multiple perspectives, designs for the stage, multi-camera video projects, and digital paintings on iPad – each offering a unique glimpse into Hockney’s diverse approaches to visual expression.

Hockney’s presence and influence permeate the entirety of the publication. He played an integral role throughout its production and envisioned the book as a comprehensive visual exploration of more than 450 of his works, introduced by a handwritten statement that lays out his artistic intentions. Although he is an artist who seldom indulges in nostalgia, this voluminous work serves both as a personal reflection for Hockney and as a comprehensive resource for art enthusiasts across the globe. “I’m not one to dwell on the past,” he remarks, “but compiling this book has made it evident just how prolific I’ve been.”

Accompanying the lavish array of artwork, the book includes an extensive illustrated chronology spanning over 600 pages. This supplementary section weaves together Hockney’s art with sketches, graphic pieces, portrait photographs, and texts drawn from his own writings as well as critiques from his contemporaries. To complete the presentation, "A Grander Tome" is offered with a bookstand designed by Marc Newson, making it a majestic addition to any collection.

Hardcover, 50 x 70 cm (19.6 x 27.5 in.), 498 pages, 13 fold-outs, with an adjustable bookstand designed by Marc Newson, plus an illustrated 680-page chronology book.
