The Artmarket Gallery, Cottingham
The Artmarket Gallery is situated in the beautiful market town of Cottingham
, East Yorkshire
Laying midway between the City of Kingston upon Hull
and the town of Beverley
, Cottingham is the largest village in England.
Cottingham dates back at the very least to the Domesday Book (1086) where it was primarily woodland and farmland, with fisheries and a mill.
Cottingham boasts an impressive Medieval church, in St. Mary the Virgin built between 1272 and 1370, with the tower added some time later in the 15th century.
Early inhabitants were not to be trifled with, after a disagreement about water supply the Cottingham villagers rioted and aproximately 1000 of them laid seige to the City of Hull - action which didn't work out so well for the villagers, eventually the y withdrew and the ringleaders were arrested and hung at York.
Cottingham grew steadily over the next few hundred years, until by 1850 it was a substantial village with over 500 houses and it's own connection to the Hull-Bridlington rail line and during WWII it housed a refugee camp, and army transit camp. A building boom in the 1950's saw the village grow rapidly until the 1980's when lack of new land caused expansion to slow.
Today, Cottingham is still a busy market town boasting shops ,a busy marketplace and is home to ~20,000 people and has four primary schools and a high school. It is famous locally for it's always impressive lights which turn Hallgate into a Christmas wonderland!
