My Window contains 120 images created by David Hockney between 2009 and 2012. Each one depicts the view from a window wherever the artist found himself on a particular day, and each is created on the technology of which he was an artistic pioneer: iPhones and iPads.
Chosen for the book by Hockney himself, the images capture a specific moment in time, creating a sort of visual diary which moves through both the days and the seasons, something which has long fascinated him.
The large-format artist’s book comes in four Art Editions, each with a print of an iPhone or IPad drawing. The fourth 250 – Art Edition D – are all accompanied by drawing No. 778, which reveals Hockney’s view on 17 April 2011.
It’s springtime, and the artist, then 73, is enjoying the riot of colour – an indigo blue curtain, which looks as though it’s probably velvet, frames an uplifting scene in which pink blossom clashes joyously with the terracotta red of a pantiled roof.
The Bradford-born artist is known as an early explorer of the creative possibilities of technology, moving from Polaroids and faxes to, in the late 2000s, the iPhone. The introduction of the iPad in In 2010, with its larger screen and integral Brushes app, opened up even greater flexibility – although he stressed to The Telegraph in an interview that year that: “I just happen to be an artist who uses the iPad, I’m not an iPad artist. It’s just a medium.”
My Window is a ‘baby sumo’ volume and the perfect companion to a previous collaboration between TASCHEN and Hockney, the spectacular A Bigger Book.
Both the book and the print are personally signed by David Hockney.
There are three further Art Editions with different prints, and also a signed Collector’s Edition (numbers 1,001 to 2,000).
