David Hockney My Window: Art Edition C (Nos. 501 to 750) with signed print No. 610, 23rd December 2010

The pictures in the book, My Window, were ‘painted’ by Hockney between 2009 and 2012 on what was then very new technology – the iPhones and iPads that have enthralled him ever since.

Curated for the book by Hockney, the 120 images show the artist’s window, depicting both objects on the internal windowsill and the views beyond. Each image in the book captures a specific moment in time, moving through both the days and the seasons.

The large-format artist’s book comes in four Art Editions, each with a print of an iPhone or iPad drawing. The third 250 – Art Edition C – are all accompanied by drawing No. 610, created by Hockney on 23 December 2010.

We must have had a white Christmas that year – the image, with a clear windowsill (Hockney’s love of flowers is evident elsewhere in the book: there’s often a vase of blooms on that sill), show a green-framed window looking out onto a gloriously seasonal scene – heavily snow-laden branches against a vivid blue sky.

The Bradford-born artist first started using the iPhone creatively in the late 2000s, enjoying the new opportunities it afforded. In 2010, he was introduced to the larger screen and Brushes app on the iPad, a medium he has worked in since, once telling The Telegraph ‘anyone who likes drawing and mark-making will like to explore new media’.

My Window is a ‘baby sumo’ volume and an ideal companion to TASCHEN’s previous collaboration with Hockney, the spectacular A Bigger Book.

Both the book and the print are personally signed by David Hockney.

There are three further Art Editions with different prints, and also a signed Collector’s Edition (numbers 1,001 to 2,000).
